Sonia joined BMJ architects as a summer student while studying at university. She qualified as an architect and then developed through all levels in the business becoming a board director/owner and has recently taken the post of Managing Director across Glasgow and London studios.
Sonia has over 30 years’ experience and is a highly experienced design team leader and project architect with specialist experience in research laboratory projects within higher education campuses and hospitals. She is passionate about delivering the correct solution for each client. She has a hands-on approach and will lead the project from inception to completion. Sonia is an excellent listener and problem solver. She spends time building relationships with Clients and design team members. She is open and honest with end users and explains everything in a simple language to ensure project objective, programme and cost parameters are met.
In addition to her architectural responsibilities, within the practice Sonia is responsible for practice management, finance, HR and QA across both studios. As a SME business it is important to develop flexibility of skills alongside your core skill to understand and run a business. The practice has evolved over the years, and Sonia is still the only female director in its history since 1911. She is hoping that will change in the future with over 40% of associate are now female.
Sonia balances work/family life with her husband and two sons that are now both at university. She loves travelling the world with her family and also enjoys swimming and water sports in Scotland – when the weather allows!
