Susan is a Structural Engineer and Director at Heyne Tillett Steel civil and structural engineers based in London. A highly skilled and experienced engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the industry, she leads a project delivery team in the London office, thriving in the creative nature of the design process and championing sustainable and low carbon design. Throughout Susan’s career, she has worked on diverse and interesting projects with some of the country’s leading architects, from private houses to large residential schemes, hotels, commercial buildings, museums, schools and theatres.
Alongside project design and delivery Susan is the Director who actively manages the HTS in-house research and innovation team HTS+, generating intelligent solutions for complex or unsolved challenges in structural engineering, as well as overseeing the company’s CSR projects which include supporting Save the Children on the design of their buildings in Yemen and Syria.
She has a long interest in creating equitable and inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. Having been the only girl to do physics A level at her large secondary school and one of only around 10 women doing an engineering degree in her year at university she wants to help support anyone from minority groups both coming through our education system and within the workplace – this is strengthened by having a daughter and a consciousness of how slow we are to change in some areas.
At HTS, she founded and continues to participate in the company DEI group and has set up and co-runs the schools outreach programme, working to create a culture that celebrates and supports the diversity of employees through actions, communications and events, and to support and improve diversity for the next generation of employees through work experience, schools, apprentices and future sponsorship programmes.
